The “ Play is Learning” workshop is attended by early care and education teachers and by families and their children. The interactive play process helps adults learn how and why children learn through play and how to provide young children activities that promote school readiness skills. Children use clean reusable materials to foster development of math, logic, problem-solving, literacy, creative thinking and social skills. The ReThink and ReUse Center encourages environmental awareness by repurposing the discarded materials. Children also learn where the materials came from, and develop an increased awareness of preserving our local environment. Teachers receive two In-Service training hours for participation.
Adults are encouraged to use recyclable materials from the ReThink and ReUse Center with children in the home and classroom. Children are natural researchers. When given the opportunity, they are challenged by the materials and develop and use critical thinking skills as they change disposable products with no pre-set purpose into creative learning experiences. By working with unusual materials children develop math, science, literacy and creative thinking skills while having fun. They also develop pro-social skills as they work together. This sets the precedent for an entire generation to work collaboratively to develop ecological preservation solutions and accept responsibility toward that environmental susainability.
